While Hvar has an exclusive image, there are plenty of cheaper places to stay. Here are some backpacker options for the hostels on the island.
With its sunshine, ideal climate and party atmosphere, the island of Hvar is becoming ever more popular with backpackers visiting Croatia, and the good news is that, despite the island's exclusive tag, there are affordable places to stay.
The bulk of the cheaper accommodation has traditionally been through private rooms and the numerous campsites on Hvar, but a recent expansion in the hostel offer has brought more choice to travellers on a budget. Here is a quick overview of the hostels on the island.
Phara Hosel, Gdinj
One of the few places to stay inland on the east of the island, the Phara Hostel is a perfect base for backpackers looking for an active holiday and investigating the island's nature. Located in the quiet village of Gdinj, some 50 km from the party atmosphere of Hvar Town, Phara is a clean hostel with friendly staff, offering a relaxed stay.
The hostel is an ideal starting point for cycling, walking, rock climbing, sea fishing, herbal walks and exploring the nearby Neolithic caves, all of which can be organised by the staff. There are 23 beds in seven rooms in a stone building in the centre of the village. Access by public transport is an issue, however, with few buses travelling the road from Jelsa to Sucuraj.
Hostel Sunce, Stari Grad
The opening of the Hostel Sunce in Stari Grad in 2010 has fulfilled an accommodation need in the oldest town on the island. Dating back to 384 BC, there is much of historical interest in the old town, but accommodation options are limited, with all the town's hotels on the other side of the harbour.
Hostel Sunce is located in the old town, a short walk from the bus station, close to the waterfront and a 10-minute walk from the beach. With bed prices starting at just 100 kuna a night (110 kuna with breakfast), the hostel is one of the most affordable places in the town, and it offers singles, doubles, triples and quadruples.
Green Lizard, Hvar Town
Most backpackers want to head for the main action in Hvar Town, however, and one of the most popular destinations is the Green Lizard hostel, which opened in 2007. Located in the newer part of town, it is a spacious and friendly place, offering laundry facilities, free WIFI and Internet, and a free map of the town.
Hvar Out Hostel, Hvar Town
New for 2011 and superbly located in the old town close to the catamaran, Hvar Out is an Australian-run hostel from the same team running the successful hostel in Split. The communal terrace has excellent views of the harbour and Pakleni islands, rooms are air-conditioned and there is free Internet and WIFI.
Luka's Lodge, Hvar Town
Another option in the island's main town is Luka's Lodge, a modern hostel a few minutes walk from the catamaran and main square. There is no curfew. Accommodation includes one single, five doubles, two triples and one quadruple, all with shared kitchen and bathroom. Free collection from the catamaran is possible if organised in advance.
Hostels tend to be very busy in peak season and, while it is possible to find a room on arrival, it is advisable to book in advance.
