Hollywood star arrives in Dalmatia with husband Javier Bardem and son Leo to shoot Venuto al Mondo after heated paparazzi exchange in Sarajevo over her son.
Actress Penelope Cruz has arrived in Croatia to continue shooting her latest film on the island of Korcula, according to local media reports on September 23, 2011. Cruz arrived from the Bosnian capital, Sarajevo, after filming scenes for Italian director Sergio Castellitto's latest work, Venuto al Mundo. The film is an adaptation of the best-selling book by Castellito's wife, Margaret Mazzantini.
Altercation with Photographer
The Hollywood star's stay in Sarajevo included an altercation with a photographer who was trying to take pictures of her infant son - Cruz has gone to extra lengths to shield him from the media - and she was reported to have snapped at the paparazzo in Bascarsija, the heart of the city's old town.
"I know you. You published photos of me with my boy, though the agreement was you wouldn't do that. You should be ashamed of yourself!" Cruz told the reporter.
A Grey-Haired Penelope Cruz
In the film, Cruz plays the single mother of a teenage boy returning to the Sarajevo of today, the hometown of his dead father, who perished in the 1992-1995 war. She looked unrecognisable in filming as she covered her hair with a grey bobbed wig.
Cruz is expected to stay ten days in Croatia, before the set moves on to Rome, and filming will take place on Korcula and the nearby town of Orebic on the Peljesac Peninsula. The cast will then return to Sarajevo in late October, and the film is due to premier next year.
The island of Korcula is one of Croatia's premier islands, including the stunning walled main town of the same name. It is most famous as being the birthplace of the pioneering adventurer, Marco Polo.
Croatia as a Celebrity Destination
The arrival of Cruz in Croatia is the latest addition to a growing trend of filming in Croatia.Ashley Judd spent time in Dubrovnik and the neighbouring island of Hvar in May, shooting scenes for the latest series of Missing, while filming of the new series of Game of Thronesbegan in Dubrovnik on September 12.
Visiting celebrities are not limited to actors, however, and two of the most high profile celebrity stories of the summer occurred on the island of Hvar, which is slightly north of Korcula. In the first, Prince Harry put Hvar Town nightclub, Veneranda, permanently on the tourist map by jumping fully clothed into a swimming pool, while Beyonce chose trendy beach bar Hula Hula in the same town to reveal her baby bump to the world.
